Pellet vs Mash Feed: Which Is Better for Your Herd?

Both pellet and mash feed carry the same nutrition, but they behave very differently in the trough and in the store room. Here is how to pick the right form for your farm.

Key Takeaways

  • Pellets give the same nutrition in every bite, with less dust and wastage.
  • Mash mixes easily into saani and suits farmers who wet-feed.
  • Switch between forms gradually over 7 – 10 days.

Walk into a feed shop and you will usually find the same feed in two forms – pellet and mash. Many farmers ask us which one is better. The honest answer: both can be excellent, but each has its own strengths. It depends on how you feed your animals.

What is mash feed?

Mash is the loose, powder-like form of feed. All the ingredients – grains, brans, oil cakes and minerals – are ground and mixed together. It is the traditional form and mixes very easily with water and chopped fodder.

What is pellet feed?

Pellet feed starts as the same mash, which is then conditioned with steam and pressed into small, firm pellets. The heat and pressure bind every ingredient into each pellet.

Uniform pellets mean every bite carries the same balanced nutrition.

Why many farmers are moving to pellets

  • No selective eating – the animal cannot pick out its favourite parts and leave the minerals behind.
  • Less waste, more value – less feed is lost as dust or spilled from the trough.
  • Easier to measure – a scoop of pellets weighs about the same every time.
  • Cleaner shed – less dust is better for the animals’ lungs and eyes, and for yours.

When mash makes sense

If your animals are used to saani and you mix feed with chopped fodder and water every day, mash is convenient and works very well. Our Super Feed is available in both forms, so you can choose what suits your routine.
